Its been a while, lets see what’s been happening

We want around 500bhp, but not from a 4 cylinder!!!!

Built on Experience. Trusted by Drivers.

15000 miles on....

Well it’s definitely been a while, what with Lock-down and Covid restrictions, work has been busy! That hasn’t stopped me from biting away at a list of things to do on the S3.I’m sure the world and his children now know that she’s running a 3.2 VR6 engine with a large turbo bolted to the back of it!I can happily say that it’s the best thing I’ve ever done to this car, she’s an absolute weapon now, regularly picking on some respectable contenders and showing them a clean pair of heals. On the subject of heals, I’ve gone back to an old favorite and managed to get hold of some rare Porsche Boxster fitment Lobster Claw alloy wheels, I even left in them in the factory silver rather than the Nimbus Grey I’d normally run to change things up a tad and I’m glad I made this decision as they really set the car off now……so much so, its had a few magazine features!!!!!……..look out for this beast in PVW magazine and FastCar magazine.

With the extra cylinders and power, more stopping power was needed so bigger front discs were sourced and now measure 360 x 32mm, these coupled with some Brembo HP2000 pads ensure I can tame this beast. I have 310mm rear discs to fit to the rear at a later date, this will complement the fronts nicely and look good doing so.

Hardlines!!!!…….I love them, they look really nice, are very durable and not seen in the average engine bay. These are made using alloy tubing and AN fittings available in various sizes and lengths. They require a special flaring tool as they are not the same flare as used in your braking system….as i found out….when everything started leaking! lol They take a lot of time, trial and error and lots of ruined pipes that didn’t go according to plan, but the results are worth the effort.

The under bonnet felt was looking slightly crispy from years of the original K04 turbo glowing like a furnace, so with some left over G2 heat shield material I fashioned up a nice piece that followed the shape of the OEM felt and is retained with the stock clips. Please get yourself a ColorMFA, its the best gadget to have in these cars, it can do so much stuff that I could dedicate a whole chapter singing its praises…..probably easier to tell you what it can’t do!!!…..It basically brings the 00’s clusters into 2022 and then some.Facebook market place can be really good if you get in early, these door panels with custom door builds for 6″ mids are one such gem I acquired when looking for something totally different. They look awesome and once fitted with new Hertz component speakers, sound brilliant too, they balance out perfect with the rears now as I’ve had 6″ mids in the rear for quite a while now. There’s a box filling up with more goodies to add in near future, stay tuned!

Chilla Movements!

And so it begins!!!

I love 20v Turbo engines, but in a heavy AWD car like my Audi S3, would require a fully built Forged engine with uprated valves etc, and a large turbo which would ultimately be a tad laggy! Now as some folks may know, I have a Mk1 Golf with just such an engine, forged, uprated valves, a moderate size turbo and all the trimmings to make a light weight car go extremely fast. I don’t want 2 heavily modified 20v’s!…….. Something needed to be done, something BIG!!!

Looky here!!

We all know that there is no substitute for cubic capacity. With this in mind I went on the search for the biggest engine i could get in my engine bay without cutting or any fancy mounts. To this end, I settled on the 3.2 V6 found in the infamous VW Golf Mk4 R32! To this some force induction would be added for good measure and to realise my end goal of 500 bhp.Once purchased, engine was immediately sent away to CTM Performance Engineering for a full rebuild with all associated parts upgraded for intended use.Look how we start with the valves, clean things up, do the required re-work, adding the 5bhp extra by applying magic paint, the belly of the beast itself, and then everything back together again.

So, with the rebuilt long engine, it was time to really start putting my mark on this work of art.

One of many boxes

Mono

Stainless steel waterpipe

That Nimbus

To keep under bonnet temperatures down, the really hot stuff was sent to Zircotec for their superb Ceramic Coating….warning, ceramic porn approaching!!

Now the fun begins, the 8L Audi A3/S3 never left the factory with a V6 engine, so it was another step into the unknown for me with this installation/conversion. After much research and raiding of the extensive VAG parts catalogue, fitting of this beastly engine could commence.

Right, IT’S IN!!!!!!!!!! Smug is an understatement! The excitement is too much!!! Que the 1st of many videos.

She runs!!! So what's next? Motion of course! Her maiden voyage was a short but very momentous occasion! Run the 2nd video, popcorn anyone?

It's been a very long road, late nights, angry bank managers, and my own doubts and unsure moments. But i knew the ride on this bumpy route would be worth it in the end.As you can hear, there is no exhaust system or any boost pipes fitted as nothing is available off the shelf. The solution to this problem comes in the name of SAS Autoworks. Only top-notch fabrication leaves these premises. So the car has been shipped off for the full monty, watch this space for some TIG porn!

Off to get some piping laid!

Boost Loading!

These 3.2 engines are not to be sniffed at!!!!!!

What is better than a R32 Golf?……….A R32 Golf TURBO is the answer. But hold on, VW never made such a car…….such a shame, but this is their loss and my gain. For a fee, I can boost your humble R32 golf from the stock 240 BHP to over 450 BHP. Now this isn’t my 1st rodeo at adding turbos to engines that were never designed for forced induction, but these later model cars require much thought and computer know how to achieve a car that could have rolled out from VW themselves.

It's not just a case of bolting on a turbo and full send. Due diligence at this stage goes a long way to ensure that what goes together, stays together. Cylinder head is rebuilt, timing chains are replaced, and many other checks are very important steps in maintaining VW quality and reliability when producing these builds.

This conversion isn’t just a “kit” of parts that you can buy from some random vendor and slap on your motor. This has come to fruition through months of development and most importantly months and miles of testing the hardware on my own car before it becomes available to the general public. Now before firing a email or calling to enquire about buying a “kit”, we don’t sell this conversion in “kit” form as this really does require bespoke parts per car and custom firmware along with individual tuning to suit each individual build we complete…….no 2 builds are the same! Regarding tuning, these builds rely on special firmware and tuning written to your factory ECU, this allows everything to function and work as VW intended……Cruise control, AC, ESP and diagnostic code reading all works as it should. Is your car DSG?…..we can accommodate and tune this transmission too.

Hans MK3 V5

So this is what greeted me on arrival to my workshop. A very straight and clean Mk3 1.4 CL Golf. The perfect base for a sleeper project. ……poor little car, it didn’t know then, but its life was about to have a dramatic change in power and sound!!!!

Say goodbye to this tiny but faithful heartbeat! With this car being a 1.4 small engine setup, lots of components need to be changed for more manly items, like fuel pump, drive shafts, exhaust…..and the list goes on, but the end result would be worth it!

Before the new power plant could be slotted into its new home, it was stripped and consumables were replaced, this included timing chains as these are known for being a “consumable” in these engines. Due to its location, which is the gearbox end of engine, behind flywheel, its wise to replace while everything is apart with far easier access!I will add that the timing chains are replaced in all VR based engines before fitment as part of the conversion process!!

Virgin Fit!

Ok, here it is!!!!The engine chosen in the end is the very much forgotten 2.3 20 valve V5/VR5 engine found in cars such as Mk4 Golf and Seat Toledo. Now the reasons for using this engine are plentiful. They cost less than any of the 24v v6 engines, there is a good supply of these, as you can buy complete donor car for far less than you think!!!!……and the most important thing is the sound track, it sounds like no other with its very distinctive tone!! Now take that and fit to a fairly light shell and things become interesting!

As you saw, these engines don’t look like much in stock hue of colours, so some delicate colour matching has been added to brighten things up!The cam cover has been carefully matched to the exterior body tone to liven things up. The inlet manifold, after much deliberation was coated in a black crackle like finish which is tough yet flexible, as the inlet manifold is made from plastic and can flex in places as the engine is put through its paces. So happy with the visuals, it was time to wire and plumb in the new heart, so it could beat that distinctive rhythm that only a 5 cylinder can play!

So she runs. With the help of a trusted Emerald K6 ECU, all controls needed to run engine are wired to ecu using a custom in-house built loom. ECU is then mounted in stock location to keep everything looking ‘stock’ as possible.A silicone water hose kit was sourced to keep water where it’s needed, ordered in red to compliment the previously painted cam cover. An air filter was sourced, yep you guessed right, in red!….but i promise you that’s it, no more red accents!!!!

Sooo, with everything buttoned up under the bonnet, it was time to deal with a few very important issues that would fall very short of maintaining this new thumping heart. Namely brakes and exhaust system. Both still very much 1.4 CL spec items. To address the brakes, a complete change of hubs were needed as the 1.4 CL brake calipers carriers are part of the hub and non removable. A set of hubs with bolt on caliper brackets were sourced and fitted. The brakes on these were then upgraded further to larger diameter discs.

The last thing to do was to give the pee shooter 1.4 exhaust system its P45 and install something a lot more free-flowing without being too flash. This job was entrusted to none other than Style Dynamics. These guys know their pipes, so with clear instructions on what style we were after, the car was booked and left with them to work their magic.

They have done themselves proud. Exactly what the doctor ordered. Below video is what this conversion was all about! Enjoy…..

Now, this car is a sleeper. But the stock wheels wouldn’t fit over the upgraded brakes so some new shoes needed to be sourced, yet still remained understated!!!! I’ll let the pictures do the talking……

Folks, I would say watch out for this car, but methinks its more a ‘listen’ out for it type of deal!On to the next project now, coming to a street near you soon!

Neill’s Mk3 OEM plus

INTRODUCTION
This Car started life as a standard Mk3 8v Gti. The owner Neill wanted to update the looks and power of the car but didn’t want to shout about it. I was enlisted to carry out a crafty engine swap to “slightly” increase the power output of this unsuspecting looking car!!! No build pictures here, I’ll let the video do the talking!

The Specs- R32 Mk5 Engine with custom loom- Emerald K6 Standalone ECU- CDA cold air intake- Dubsport 6 into 1 branch- Milltek decat- Milltek exhaust system- Fully rebuilt VR6 Gearbox- Quaife Limited Slip Differential- Short shifter- 312mm Audi TT brakes- 287bhp

Hans MK2

INTRODUCTION
So this is the story of a humble Mk2 GTi 8v belonging to a lovely gentleman named Hans Grobler. When I first met Hans, he wasn’t sure what engine he wanted in his ultra clean Mk2. Lets be honest here and say that there isn’t much, engine wise, that hasn’t been fitted to a VW Golf mk2. The criteria was that whatever we decided on had to be done in keeping with the uber clean nature of the car. So after much deliberation, the sound of the V6 is what made Hans grin from ear to ear. But not any old V6, it had to be special and look the part too! ……read on for full story.

Stock looking motor!
So this is how Hans dropped the car to me. Standard looking with a set of rims. Nothing on this car is rusty, it’s either been replaced or refurbished.

So first job was to remove the very clean 8v engine.

Next up was the installation of the necessary mk3 golf subframe, gear linkage and a hydraulic clutch conversion to make the chosen engine work in harmony with the mk2 golf shell.Exciting build!

Menacing view!Like i really need to write anything else below this picture!

The money shot!!So, with a rebuilt VR6 gearbox, new clutch etc, the new heart, a 3.2 24v V6 aka R32 engine sits in her rightful place. But she doesn’t beat yet!

Now she beats!

Plumbed in, wired with a VW Enterprises custom loom to a Emerald K6 ecu, she now beats loud and proud!

So after i had done my work, the car was taken to Style Dynamics for a custom 2.5 inch stainless steel exhaust with their bespoke OEM style tailpipes! I promise you there is nothing OEM about the sound track this system emits…….Turn your speakers up and play the above video!!!! Well that’s the car finished? ….Or is it?

Hans Dash

INTRODUCTION
Ok, so the engine conversion was done, and Hans Grobler was enjoying his weapon. But there was a few things bothering him. Mainly the mk3 instrument cluster in the mk2 dashboard. Time to fix this.

Right, good-bye old friend, it was nice knowing you!

All gone!
The point of no return, wires everywhere, a box full of screws and heater vents with nowhere to vent!

In order for mk3 dashboard to fit and for heater to work correctly, the OEM bulkhead support needs to be removed to allow everything to fit. It is then painted to offer some extra protection from the elements.

All done and dusted, so the dashboard now matches the instrument cluster!

Dan’s Mk1

INTRODUCTION
This car started life as 1.1 Mk1 Golf. Used because it was solid and had no sunroof. The original owner wanted the car built strictly for shows and with this in mind was built with the bare essentials to make a show winning beast! Pictures don’t do this car any justice, but can be seen at most of the major shows!!!

The Specs- 2.0 16v ABF Engine, uprated rods and pistons. Port and polished cylinder head.- T3 Hybrid Turbo, Custom Tubular Manifold, Stainless Steel exhaust system.- Emerald ECU, 440cc Injectors, Custom hidden engine loom. 3 stage boost settings.- 02s 6speed Gearbox, Quaife ATB Differential, 6 Puck Clutch, Solid Flywheel.- 4 Pot Wilwood Brake Calipers with 305mm discs, Rear disc conversion.- H&R Ultra Low Coilovers, Notched chassis to clear drive shafts.- 349bhp 325lb/ft torque

Ranjit's Mk5

So Ranjit brought his R32 it seems with one goal in mind…..TURBO! The conversation was short and brief, he knew what he wanted and I was only happy to oblige. With the various options I have available he choose to go with the decompression plate route as he didn’t want to rotate earth on its axis and wanted to remain sensible…..if that’s at all possible! LOL.

On this build, we chose to use a BorgWarner Turbo. Price vs performance and availability made this decision really easy. This with a 38mm wastegate will ensure that Ranjit can run all and control to boost on tap. The engine has had a top end refresh as head gasket was on its way out so required a skim and new seals etc. The usual timing chains were duly replaced, along with heavy duty bearings and ARP hardware to keep everything in check.

With a heavy duty clutch mated to stock dualmass flywheel, everything was bolted back in place and an intercooler was selected and mounted to the front panel and the car was shipped off to Style Dynamics for boost pipes and exhaust fabrication……and these guys sure know their stuff…….TIG porn!

So with all of that done and signed off, it was time to get this beast running and out the door, the ECU was then loaded with our bespoke custom firmware and a custom Cal was built, bespoke to this car and everything dialed in on 12psi of boost and sent on its way. It will be back for more in due course but for now, Ranjit is happy. Volume up and hit play!

Zack’s Mk1 Cab VR6

INTRODUCTION
Hey folks, so this Mk1 Golf Cab has been dragged to my workshop for surgery!!!. The owner Zack, contacted me after he had been let down by the previous garage who had his car for a long period of time with nothing done. He gave me a brief description of what was done, and a long list of what needed doing and what he would like…..a thin line between both!!! I must add.

So with car delivered, I set about making a very long list of what was needed and devise a plan of how to best achieve this. The car was delivered with the required engine already installed. Now in hindsight, what i thought was the hard part done turned out to be the easiest part of this whole conversion. You see, this Mk1 Golf has a VR6 engine slotted in. And not the commonly known way of welding in cups from a Mk3 subframe or the like. This car uses what’s known as a EuroWise kit. Basically it allows you to mount up VR6 engine and box without any cutting or welding!!! Great we say, and it is but this throws up a whole host of other problems.

The Engine Is Already In!!!

So as stated, the engine was already installed in the car, this setup uses a company called Eurowise in the USA for its mounts and driveshafts. Now the way this kit works is by moving the engine over towards the centre of the bay and bolts up to the factory mounting points. Horaay we all shout, then the elephant in the room asks about driveshafts!!!…..With the engine sitting nicely on its new mounts, over towards the left hand side of the bay, the original Mk1 cab shafts no longer fit. Fear not, the Eurowise kit comes with a new pair of shafts that fit perfect. Only time will tell how these will hold up, but they look well made and come with OEM spec inner and outer joints.

Braking Point!

This is a Mk1 Golf cab shell, which means that it had the dreaded cross-bar brake linkage. Guess what?…… the brake servo and master cylinder no longer fit because engine is now in the way with these “lovely” Eurowise mounts. Solution; junk the whole lot and install a bias pedal box complete with hydraulic clutch!!! This was made easier by the dash not being fitted. Needless to say, all new pipes had to be made and rerouted within the cabin area.

It’s a 1.8 carb mate!

Fuel pumps etc

All the right Gear!!!

The owner decided to go against the grain and convert his VR6 gearbox to rod change instead of the OEM cable shift. Now after a lot of pissing around with extending rods, because “Eurowise Mounts” and lots of adjustments, I can now proudly say that this is an awesome setup. Very direct, short throws and a reassuring clunk as it slots into gear!

Rod Conversion

I’m Exhausted now!!!

Eurowise mounts and Rod Conversion gear linkage means that no downpipe exists for this car! So one VR6 downpipe, chop-saw and a few welds later and all is well in the exhaust department. Mated to a Jetex system it sounds sweet!

Downpipe

I’m Wired now!

Wiring and plumbing to do and we done! Now in any other model of golf ie: Mk2 or Mk3 I would simply swap over the VR6 wiring harness and ecu, connect water hoses and literally shut the bonnet. But this is a MK1, the engine bay is a lot smaller and the fusebox is on the other side. So rather than cutting up the loom, which requires lots of sensors that we have no use for, I threw the OEM ECU in nearest bin and employed my tried and tested Emerald K6 ECU, built a short tidy loom and wired into Mk1 fusebox, to be mounted, at a later date in the now absent glovebox, job done!

As for the water system, it’s an upside down Passat TDi rad, twin fans which are wired to Emerald ECU via a relay and all is well. Why that rad upside down? Its huge, but both outlets are on the wrong side, spin it around and voila!…..but the fan switch can’t do its job now as it would now sit in top of rad, so the Emerald ECU is called upon to take control of fans! The Emerald ECU has many tricks to aid installation including syncing of rpm meter of Mk1 cluster to correct engine rpm!

Finish Line!!!

And here it is, the finished article. On to the next. I’m out, enjoy!

OOOOOH, no VR6 is complete without that VR rumble!

Tim’s RS4

A fellow 4 rings owner needed lowness in his life. H&R came to the rescue with their Monotube Coilover Kit. So with car and kit delivered, surgery commenced…….

Vikin’s Mk1 Golf

INTRODUCTION
Right, this Mk1 golf has a 1.8T engine conversion. Its a AUM code engine and gearbox, with OEM ecu & dbw throttle, all fitted….BADLY!!! To cut a long story short, after a full inspection it was deemed a wiring right off. Mechanically it wasn’t too bad, there was a few issues that needed addressing but nowhere near as fatal as the engine wiring harness.

As you can see it wasn’t pretty. But I knew that this could be turned into a nice weapon once I’d worked my magic! So out with my trusty wire cutters and let the strip down commence. All I got to say is some folks should never be allowed near electrics!!!!

Everything to do with electronics on this car was FUBAR! It looked like Stevie Wonder & Ray Charles teamed up & had a wire party in there!! So after much work, all the unhealthy wiring & ancillaries were removed to provide a clean foundation to build upon and rewire, but 1st, a much-needed clean!

One steam clean later!

So with this done, it was time to “VWE” this engine bay! Now if you know me then you will already have gathered that functionality and eye candy have to work harmlessly together to gain them rare special window stickers! lol

Something was missing, well a lot was missing, but……. I thought……. this engine bay needed a splash of colour! So with this in mind, a spare inlet manifold and cam cover were sent off for colorization. The cam cover is painted Mars red to match exterior hue of car and good ole satin black for inlet manifold to compliment the new black coolant and turbo intake pipes.

Because of the butchery done to the OEM loom, and the unsure condition of many of the management system components including the ecu, it made more sense to fit a Emerald K6 ecu & construct a custom loom for this application. Once done it makes for such a clean uncluttered install. The light at the end of the tunnel now shines for this car. A few more touches and its out the door.

With a little effort, some thought and copious amounts of love, this Mk1 golf is now finished! Roll on the next patient…..hold on, it’d be rude not to end this article without a video. Enjoy!

Hemal’s Mk2 1.8 GL

Unwanted parts don’t get thrown away, they get recycled. I removed the 2.0 ABF engine from Matty’s More Door Golf and listed it on eBay. It sat on there for a while whilst getting the usual eBay dreamers and time wasters!!! Eventually a young man contacted me with a plan to “Up His Viva” on a smart looking More Door 1.8 GL Mk2 Golf. So a deal was done and the engine was delivered to said young man Hemal, who by now had spent a lot of time chatting to me to achieve the best bang for his money.

Hemal had twin 40 DCOE’s mounted to his 8 valver, and as anyone who has gone down this route will know, are a pain in the rear end and the closely situated pocket!!!…..needing constant tuning and hard hot starts made life hard for Hemal. I suggested that he utilizes the stock ABF inlet with an aftermarket standalone ECU. This way he wouldn’t suffer the same fate as he did with the carbs. The problem was the roar from those 4 trumpets had Hemal hooked and he just had to have that sound again, so he decided on Jenvey Throttle Bodies mated to one of Emeralds K6 ECU’s .Hemal is no stranger to spanners as his father runs a garage/Mot station. So between Hemal and his Dad, they stripped and rebuilt the engine using high-compression pistons and a few other key components to help extract the most from his new power plant.

It was then down to me to wire in the mk3 VR6 fuel tank and pump along with the Emerald ECU and a few odds and ends. Once a few final checks were made and all fluids topped up it was time to fire up the beast. OMG, what a sweet sounding beast, words just can’t describe, so have a listen below!

So now that it’s in, it just needs mapping, but i’m sure I heard Hemal muttering something about installing uprated camshafts!!!!……watch this space guys!!!

Matty’s Mk2

INTRODUCTION
Ok ladies and gents, I introduce the latest project to enter the VWE stable. The owner of this car, Matty has been planning this build for a while and collecting parts while still driving his more door mk2 ABF 16v. A lot of the parts needed were attached to said car so at the end of February it was pulled off the road and put to rest!!! So for today here are some “before” pictures!!!

So, my next job is to remove the KR 16v engine and all associated gubbins, stay tuned…..

Ok guys, the story so far. The engine has now been removed and the dashboard conversion is well under way. I tell you this for free……engine conversions are a shed load easier and quicker than doing a dashboard conversion. VAG made sure their engines used the same mounting pickup points, shame about their dashes, designed specific for each model and not transferable!!!!! But this is VW Enterprises, we like a challenge. So with lots of trimming and modding, the job was started in earnest.

And the money shots of completed dash conversion. Factory look, after a few choice words of a colourful nature.

Now that the dash is sorted i can get on with engine conversion in earnest!

New Heart installed, not beating yet!

Well this is the final install on this build. The last and most important piece of the puzzle, getting the engine plumbed and wired commences in earnest!

Custom engine loom under construction!

OK, so after some serious wiring and plumbing, I turned the key and she fired into life. Methinks that the best part of any build is the turning of that key for the 1st time!!! So after a cerebration drink it was time to Finish what i had started!!!

Fresh!

So all that was left was brakes, suspension and wheels. All bolt on goodies so was a straight forward affair. Car sailed through MOT and handed over to a very eager owner! Watch out for this boosted terror on a street near you soon!

The Cars

This is our man cave, generally women ain’t aloud in here unless dedicated to the cause!!!

“The” Mk1 Golf Gti - aka The Wife

The most famous of the cars I’ve built has got to be my very own Mk1 Golf Gti, purchased back in 1996 as a very rough 1983 model. It has had a ground up restoration and numerous engines along the way, with the ground breaking 1.8T engine as the base for beast of an engine now gracing the bay. Nothing new nowadays, but i grafted this engine into said Mk1 back in 1999!!!! Its been laid up sleeping for a “while” and will resurface soon, look out for updates!!!!

My Old Mk3 16v ABF - aka The Ex

This used to be my girl, she was a 2.0 16v ABF with 86K on the clock. It had an inlet cam and a chip to unleash the full potential of this stallion. 312mm front brake discs and the usual coilover affair. The body work was left in the hands of a local bodyshop to fix a few dents and a quick tidy…….things got a tad out of control and ended up with smoothed bumpers, rolled arches and a narrow rear number plate recess!!!! Good job really as there was just enough room to squeeze those 8 x 18 inch rollers under there! She was a quick little car seeing off many a VR6!!!I did plan to turbo the ABF but someone made me an offer i couldn’t refuse and so she was sold on to a loving home.

My Audi S3 aka Chilla (also aka - The Mistress)

Well, after working on a few of these i quickly knew that one day i would own one. There could be only 2 colours that i would choose from, Negaro Blue or Imola Yellow. So after much searching i found the ideal patient. The engine had seen better days, which wasn’t an issue, my main problem was the car was in Glasgow and I’m in London and it doesn’t drive!!!! Anyways, one rented trailer, a borrowed Land Rover and nearly a thousand miles later she was home!!Now the plan was to get it running good again and use it as my daily!……How many of us have said this and end up purchasing another car as a daily because things got a tad out of hand????Case in point, exhibit S:
