Vikin’s Mk1 Golf

Right, this Mk1 golf has a 1.8T engine conversion. Its a AUM code engine and gearbox, with OEM ecu & dbw throttle, all fitted….BADLY!!! To cut a long story short, after a full inspection it was deemed a wiring right off. Mechanically it wasn’t too bad, there was a few issues that needed addressing but nowhere near as fatal as the engine wiring harness.

OMG!

As you can see it wasn’t pretty. But I knew that this could be turned into a nice weapon once I’d worked my magic! So out with my trusty wire cutters and let the strip down commence. All I got to say is some folks should never be allowed near electrics!!!!

Everything to do with electronics on this car was FUBAR! It looked like Stevie Wonder & Ray Charles teamed up & had a wire party in there!! So after much work, all the unhealthy wiring & ancillaries were removed to provide a clean foundation to build upon and rewire, but 1st, a much-needed clean!

One steam clean later!

So with this done, it was time to “VWE” this engine bay! Now if you know me then you will already have gathered that functionality and eye candy have to work harmlessly together to gain them rare special window stickers! lol

Something was missing, well a lot was missing, but……. I thought……. this engine bay needed a splash of colour! So with this in mind, a spare inlet manifold and cam cover were sent off for colorization. The cam cover is painted Mars red to match exterior hue of car and good ole satin black for inlet manifold to compliment the new black coolant and turbo intake pipes.

Because of the butchery done to the OEM loom, and the unsure condition of many of the management system components including the ecu, it made more sense to fit a Emerald K6 ecu & construct a custom loom for this application. Once done it makes for such a clean uncluttered install. The light at the end of the tunnel now shines for this car. A few more touches and its out the door.

With a little effort, some thought and copious amounts of love, this Mk1 golf is now finished! Roll on the next patient…..hold on, it’d be rude not to end this article without a video. Enjoy!
